Time to focus on providing posts and training for health visitors, rather than more costly recruitment drives16th April 2013

The Department of Health’s (DH) recent report into the government’s five-year plan to increase the number of health visitors by 2015, reveals the recruitment campaign to be ‘well off trajectory’.
Since 2010, a great deal of money has been channelled into recruitment drives, but while this has prompted interest (nearly 42,000 responses), there are still not enough posts and training places available.
Janet Snell argues that with NHS reforms shifting the responsibility of public health to local authorities, the time is right to reinvigorate and expand the health visitor workforce, rather than ploughing a further £865,000 into marketing campaigns, which the DH claim is part of their ‘robust plan to get back on track’.
